Original Work: Finding Your Voice on the guitar
Writing original music is one of the most rewarding parts of being a guitarist. It's not about perfection—it's about expression.
Here’s how to start creating music that’s uniquely yours:
-
Start With Emotion – Let your feelings guide your fingers. Ask yourself: What do I want this piece to say?
-
Experiment With Progressions – Move beyond basic chords. Try modal interchange, open tunings, or alternate voicings.
-
Melody First or Riff First? – Some players write with their voice, others with their hands. There’s no wrong way—just keep writing.
-
Record Everything – Your phone is your best writing partner. Capture every idea. You never know which 10-second riff becomes your next full track.
Percussive Guitar: Turning Rhythm Into Melody
Percussive techniques transform your guitar into a full rhythm section. Inspired by players like Jon Gomm, Andy McKee, or Rodrigo y Gabriela? You're in the right place.
Try incorporating:
-
Body Taps & Slaps – Use the body of your guitar for kick/snare effects while fretting or fingerpicking.
-
Palm Muting & Rhythmic Ghost Notes – Create groove and tension by blending dead notes with open strums.
-
Fingerstyle Percussion – Combine thumb slaps with bass lines and melody for a full one-person-band effect.
-
Loop Pedals – Build layers in real-time to jam, compose, or perform complex arrangements solo.
